Miami saltwater attacks your hull three ways at once: biological growth that never gets a winter kill-off, galvanic corrosion that eats zincs and then moves on to your shafts and trim tabs, and bottom paint that gives up its copper faster in 86°F water than it ever would up north. The fix is not a different paint or a better zinc — it’s a cleaning interval short enough that barnacles never get a foothold and a diver who checks your anodes and running gear every single visit.

Biscayne Bay water is warm, salty, and never rests

Surface temps in the Bay sit in the low 70s in January and push into the high 80s from June through September. Boats in Chesapeake or Long Island Sound get four months where growth essentially stops. Here, nothing stops. Salinity in open Bay water off Dinner Key or Miami Beach Marina runs close to full ocean strength, which is exactly what barnacles, tube worms, and calcareous bryozoans want.

The practical result: on a hull we clean every four weeks in August, we’re wiping soft slime and a scattering of new barnacle cyprids. On the same hull at eight weeks, we’re scraping hard shell off the rudder, the strut, and the leading edge of the keel — and hard shell is what damages paint, because removing it takes pressure the antifouling was never designed to absorb.

Slime slows you down; barnacles cost you paint

Owners tend to worry about the wrong layer. A brown or green slime film feels alarming when you look over the side at your slip in Coconut Grove, but soft fouling comes off with a light pass and doesn’t harm the coating. It does cost fuel and speed, especially on planing hulls where a fuzzy bottom keeps the boat from getting cleanly up.

Barnacles are the real expense. Each one cements a calcium base plate to the paint. When it’s pulled off after weeks of growth, it takes antifouling with it, leaving a dime-sized bare spot that then becomes the preferred landing site for the next generation. That’s how a bottom job that should last two seasons in South Florida turns into a bare-patch mosaic in fourteen months. Consistent light cleanings are cheaper than one heavy one, and far cheaper than repainting early.

Galvanic corrosion: your zincs are working harder than you think

Warm, high-conductivity saltwater speeds up electrochemistry the same way it speeds up biology. Anodes that would last a year in cooler brackish water routinely go chalky and pitted in six to eight months here — and much faster in a crowded marina with shore power on every pedestal, where stray current from a neighboring boat’s wiring finds a path through the water and uses your zincs as the sacrifice.

What we look for underwater: anode surface area, not just presence. A zinc that’s 60% consumed and crusted over isn’t protecting anything, because the crust insulates it. We also check for pink or coppery patches on bronze props and struts — that’s dezincification, the early sign that the bronze itself is being stripped. If your zincs are disappearing in three months while the boat next to you goes a year on the same anodes, the problem is electrical, not underwater growth, and it needs an electrician before it eats a shaft.

Brackish pockets change what grows on you

Not all South Florida water is the same water. Boats kept up the Miami River, in the New River through downtown Fort Lauderdale, or in the canals off Oleta and Dania Cut sit in water that swings brackish after heavy rain and during outflow. Barnacle pressure drops there, but you trade it for aggressive soft growth, freshwater algae, and mud accumulation in the props, strainers, and shaft logs.

Boats on the ocean side — Haulover, Bahia Mar, Sunset Harbour — get relentless hard fouling and heavier growth on anything downstream of a through-hull discharge, where warm water exits. That’s why the same 42-footer needs a different cleaning rhythm depending on which side of the causeway it lives on. We adjust based on what we actually find on the hull, not a calendar template.
